Hospital Clínic Barcelona has issued critical advice for residents and visitors. The institution helps distinguish between heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Prompt action can prevent serious health consequences during high temperatures. Both conditions are serious, but heatstroke requires immediate emergency attention.
Understanding Heat Exhaustion
Dr. Mireia Sans, an emergency doctor at Hospital Clínic Barcelona, explains the importance of understanding symptoms. "It is important to know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke to act quickly and prevent serious consequences," she stated. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses too much water and salt. This often happens from excessive sweating. Symptoms include heavy sweating, cold, pale, clammy skin, a fast, weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, and dizziness. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should move to a cooler place. They should lie down, loosen clothing, apply cool, damp cloths, and sip water. Medical help is necessary if symptoms worsen or last over an hour.
Recognising Heatstroke as an Emergency
Heatstroke is a medical emergency. The body overheats and fails to regulate its temperature. Core body temperature rises rapidly to 40°C or higher. Symptoms differ significantly from heat exhaustion. They present as hot, red, dry or damp skin, a fast, strong pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures. If someone shows signs of heatstroke, call emergency services on 112 immediately. While waiting for help, move the person to a cooler area. Try to cool them with cool cloths or a bath. Do not give fluids to someone suffering from heatstroke.
Staying Safe in Barcelona's Heat
Preventing both conditions involves simple steps. These are especially crucial for Barcelona's population, including its 1.6 million residents and numerous tourists. Drink plenty of fluids like water or fruit juice. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid strenuous activity between 12:00 and 18:00, the hottest part of the day. Taking cool showers or baths also helps. Stay in air-conditioned spaces. Additionally, check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. These groups are more susceptible to heat-related conditions.
