Commuter train services on two key Rodalies lines, R3 and R14, faced significant interruptions from 06:41 on Monday, 22nd June. An infrastructure incident halted the R3 line between La Garriga and Les Franqueses del Vallès in Barcelona province. Meanwhile, a fire and copper theft near Montblanc stopped the R14 line in Tarragona province.
Rodalies, the regional commuter rail operator, confirmed the disruptions. The R3 line interruption occurred due to an issue with the railway infrastructure itself. Meanwhile, the R14 line experienced a double incident: a fire close to the tracks and a separate infrastructure problem at Montblanc station. Rodalies stated that a copper theft caused these issues on the R14 line.
The R3 line connects central Barcelona with towns further north in the Vallès Oriental region, including La Garriga. The R14 line links Barcelona with parts of Tarragona province, serving towns like Reus and Montblanc. These lines are vital for thousands of daily commuters travelling for work and study. The incidents will cause considerable delays and inconvenience for many residents.
Civil Protection Activates Emergency Plan
Following the R14 incident, Civil Protection (Protecció Civil) activated its Ferrocat plan to pre-alert status. This plan outlines emergency procedures for railway incidents across Catalonia. Activating Ferrocat ensures a coordinated response from various emergency services.
Impact on Commuters and Regional Travel
The R3 interruption affects travel between La Garriga and Les Franqueses del Vallès. Passengers on this route must seek alternative transport. The R14 disruption impacts a longer stretch, from Reus to Vinaixa, including Montblanc. This significantly affects regional connectivity within Tarragona province. Rodalies advises passengers to check their website or app for real-time updates and alternative travel options.
Authorities are working to resolve both incidents and restore services. However, the nature of infrastructure damage and fire response suggests potential for prolonged delays. Commuters should plan for extended journey times and consider other transport methods throughout the day.
