Igualada took centre stage as the 10th Vadefoodies Festival filled the Rambla de Sant Isidre with traditional Catalan food, tastings and live cooking. The main draw was the final of the second Catalonia Capipota Competition, which crowned winners in both the classic and innovation categories.
Es cul de sac restaurant, from Igualada, won the classic category, while Albert Boronat of Colmado de Llívia took the innovation prize. Each winner received €500. The festival was organised by the Vadefoodies Gastronomic and Cultural Association with Igualada City Council.
The judging panel included Igualada City Councillor Miquel Vives, Catalan Tripe Guild president Josep Ramells, and gastronomic journalist Salvador García Arbó. They assessed dishes from 18 contestants from across Catalonia, with the event focused on offal, local produce and dishes rooted in Catalan cooking.
The festival opened with the popular Breakfast with a Lot of Snout, a fork breakfast that drew around 100 people. It featured sausages from Sant Martí de Sesgueioles, Albert Boronat’s veal head terrine, and capipota from Sant Josep restaurant in Bellver de Cerdanya, which won the first edition of the competition. The breakfast also included the Eater of the Year award for La Vanguardia journalist and writer Albert Molins.
Later in the day, the Rambla Gastronòmica offered tastings of dishes, tapas and wines from Anoia cellars and restaurateurs. The programme also included jazz concerts with VadeJazz and a live showcooking by chef Mar Shovinar, who prepared rice with capipota.
The festival also added a professional strand this year. On Monday, 8 June, Adoberia Bella hosted the first Viscera Cuisine Forum, with a presentation by Michelin-starred chef Javi Estévez, among other experts. For more Barcelona-area food and community coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
