Lionel Messi's real estate investment firm, Edifici Rostower Socimi, has acquired the iconic Galeries Wagner building in Barcelona's high-end Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district for €11.5 million. This purchase ends a three-decade dormancy for the historic commercial property.

The acquisition from Santomera Bay, a 'private office' led by Alejandro Alcaraz, marks a significant investment in Barcelona's property market. The building, located near Turó Park, occupies a large block. This block lies between Avinguda Diagonal, Beethoven, Bori i Fontestà, and Ganduxer streets. This area is known for its affluent residents and exclusive establishments.

Galeries Wagner first opened its doors on 15 November 1985. It quickly became one of the city's most elite commercial spaces, spanning over 3,000 square metres. The galleries housed high-end shops, attracting shoppers to the city's upper zone.

History of Galeries Wagner

The commercial centre closed permanently in 1993 after just eight years of operation. Its decline followed years of store closures and challenges from property speculators. A key factor in its downfall was the fragmented ownership structure. One hundred different individuals owned the various establishments. This complex ownership made managing the large commercial space extremely difficult.

Messi's Growing Property Portfolio

Edifici Rostower Socimi is a publicly traded real estate investment company. Lionel Messi owns this company. It also holds other significant assets. These include MiM Hotels, which Meliá Hotels International operates. MiM Hotels has properties in Sitges, Ibiza, Mallorca, Vaquèira, Sotogrande, and Andorra. Additionally, the company owns Seguidor restaurants. Prestigious Catalan chef Nandu Jubany manages these restaurants.

Future of the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi Site

The purchase signals a potential revitalisation for the dormant site. Residents in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, a district home to approximately 148,000 people, will watch for future development plans. The building's prominent location on Avinguda Diagonal makes it a high-profile asset. Its return to active commercial use could bring new services or retail options to the area. Future announcements will detail plans for the extensive commercial space. This development will shape the commercial offerings in one of Barcelona's most exclusive neighbourhoods.
