Barcelona and the towns just north of the city were hit by disruption on Friday after a wildfire in Tiana led to confinement orders, road closures and the arrest of one man over the suspected cause of the blaze.
Catalonia's interior minister, Núria Parlon, confirmed the arrest at a press conference. The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the fire's origin, while the Generalitat and local authorities told people in the affected areas to stay inside, shut doors and windows, and avoid travelling through the smoke zone.
Protecció Civil sent an Es-Alert message ordering confinement in Tiana, Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Martorelles and Santa Maria de Martorelles. The order also covered residents of the Colonia Bosc housing development and the Conreria hostel. Tiana Town Hall said access was restricted around the sports complex area, the municipal swimming pool was closed, and the B-500 road between Badalona and Mollet del Vallès was shut in both directions.
Bombers de la Generalitat said the alert came in at 10:45am for a fire affecting the landfill area between Tiana and Montgat. Firefighters said the blaze was moving with several active fronts and smoke columns were visible from Barcelona. Crews were working across about 60 hectares.
In a later update on Friday, Bombers said the operation was developing favourably while crews worked on a fourth active focus. The service said it had 26 ground units and 10 aerial resources on the scene.
