Montblanc, a historic town in Tarragona province, located approximately 90 minutes by car from Barcelona, will host Catalonia's largest medieval fair from 17 to 26 April. This 39th edition transforms the town into a vibrant medieval setting, offering a rich programme of markets, crafts, wine tastings, and spectacular fire shows. Barcelona Secreta reported the extensive schedule.

The festival's main activity concentrates over two weekends, 18-19 April and 25-26 April, drawing numerous visitors. Attendees can explore the bustling Medieval Market and Crafts Exhibition, open from 10:00 to 21:00 on Saturdays and 10:00 to 20:00 on Sundays. This provides ample opportunity to discover traditional goods and artisan skills.

The Medieval Wine Market will also feature prominently in the Fossar de la muralla de Sant Francesc. Fourteen local wineries, including Celler Carles Andreu, Mas Foraster, Gerida Viticultors, and Vinícola de Sarral, will participate, offering tastings. The central event, the 39th Representation of the Legend of Sant Jordi, takes place on Saturday, 18 April. Performances are scheduled for 21:15 and 23:00 at Passeig de Joan Martí i Alanis, known as El Foradot.

Immersive Medieval Experiences

The fair officially opens on Friday, 17 April, with the grand Royal Entourage arriving from Pont Vell. This is followed by the symbolic act of presenting the first rose of the year, a cherished tradition. In the evening, the "Dracum Nocte i els quatre elements" show will captivate audiences. This performance features light, sound, pyrotechnics, and video projections on the ancient town walls, dramatically invoking the arrival of evil forces. It promises a truly immersive experience for all.

New Additions and Historic Recreations

This year's edition introduces several new attractions for visitors. These include the Jordi Savall festival on Saturday, 25 April, at 12:45, a giant chess game, and the 20th anniversary celebration of the Dúcties. Notably, the traditional Medieval Dinner will not occur this year. The former Sant Francesc church is undergoing significant rehabilitation works, a project costing nearly €3 million. Instead, a special evening of dances and other cultural activities will take place on Friday, 24 April, in Plaça de Sant Francesc, offering an alternative celebration.

The festival concludes on Sunday, 26 April, with a recreation of the Catalan Courts of 1414. This historically significant event will be held at the Església de Santa Maria, with limited capacity for the general public. Montblanc's medieval fair offers a unique opportunity for Barcelona residents and tourists to experience Catalonia's rich history and vibrant traditions. Visitors can consult the full programme online for specific event times and ticket requirements for shows like "Dracum" and "Les Nits Malignes."
