Barcelona’s Montjuïc Funicular will resume normal service on Monday, 13 April, at 07:30. This follows a six-month closure for essential infrastructure works and its annual mandatory review.
The funicular, which connects Avinguda del Paral·lel with the base of the Montjuïc cable car, ceased operations on 20 October. Works on the Vila i Vilà water collector necessitated the extended shutdown. These works directly affected the cable transport’s installations.
The Ajuntament de Barcelona executed these crucial works. They aimed to improve the drainage system in Avinguda del Paral·lel, Ronda de Sant Pau, and Carrer Vilà i Vilà. This project forms a key part of the city’s Climate Plan.
Infrastructure Improvements
Installing the collector pipe required demolishing a section of the funicular’s access corridor. This corridor connects from the Paral·lel metro station, which serves L2 and L3 lines. This demolition made passenger access impossible during construction.
Workers rebuilt the corridor and re-established services once the collector’s connection finished. This allowed the cable transport to prepare for its return to operation.
Maintenance and Alternative Services
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) took advantage of the closure for the funicular’s annual maintenance and review. These mandatory tasks typically halt service for one month each year.
The Montjuïc Funicular transports over 3,000 passengers daily. It serves residents of the Poble-sec neighbourhood and visitors to Montjuïc. TMB provided alternative mobility options during the closure period.
A special shuttle bus service linked the funicular’s two stations, Paral·lel and Parc de Montjuïc. This service operated with the same hours and a 7-12 minute frequency. TMB also recommended using the regular bus line 150. This line connects Plaça d’Espanya to Montjuïc Castle.
Summer Operating Hours
From Monday, 13 April, the funicular will operate on its summer schedule. Weekdays will see service from 07:30 to 22:00. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, it will run from 09:00 to 22:00.
