Barcelona's Navas neighbourhood has secured the future of its iconic Font de la Guineu, or Fox Fountain, which will be relocated to the centre of Plaça de la Guineu. This agreement, reached on Monday, resolves a 17-year-long concern among residents about the fountain's potential disappearance due to a new student residence development. The resolution follows mediation between the Barcelona City Council and the property owner.
Fountain's Future Secured
The fountain currently sits on a private plot next to Biscaia Street. This site has long been approved by the City Council for a student residence project. Residents of Navas, a vibrant district within Sant Andreu, had feared the loss of this emblematic landmark. Carles Brown, president of the AVV Torrent de la Guineu, Navas neighbourhood association, expressed the community's initial reluctance. He stated, "We do not want any building here, but there is no choice but to accept it as it is already a fait accompli." The City Council confirmed that all three parties, including the property developer, met on Monday, according to Navas neighborhood Barcelona history. They have scheduled further meetings to jointly define the development plan.
New Public Passage Planned
Crucially, the new student residence will incorporate a dedicated public thoroughfare. This passage will connect the northern and southern parts of the Navas neighbourhood. This feature addresses a long-standing demand from local residents for improved connectivity. The pedestrian link will begin at the residence's future reception area. It will include both stairs and an adapted ramp, designed to overcome the current elevation difference on the site.
Balancing Development and Community
The design of this new passage prioritises user experience. It will feature glass walls and an open skylight, aiming to prevent any sensation of passing through a closed tunnel. This innovative approach mirrors the public passage on La Rambla, which connects the famous promenade to Plaça de la Vila de Madrid. The preservation of the Font de la Guineu and the creation of a new, accessible public route highlight the Barcelona City Council's commitment. They aim to balance essential urban development with the specific interests and heritage of local communities. This outcome ensures the Navas community retains a cherished landmark while gaining improved neighbourhood connectivity.
