Rupit, a picturesque village nestled in Catalonia’s Osona region, earned global recognition in 2023 when the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) named it one of the “most beautiful villages in the world”. Located just 90 minutes by car from Barcelona, this charming destination now tops lists for rural tourism in Spain.
Spain boasts 8,132 municipalities, a figure exceeding many of its Mediterranean neighbours. This extensive network allows many villages to showcase unique landscapes. The UNWTO’s 2023 recognition highlighted Spain’s role in representing urban and natural beauty, encouraging global tourists to visit the fortunate villages. The organisation awarded this title to 32 villages across five continents.
Rupit, a small settlement, stands out in international guides for its rich architectural and historical heritage. It also receives praise for its active policies promoting sustainable tourism. The village has successfully preserved the medieval essence of its urban centre. Visitors can explore 16th-century stone houses, cobbled streets, and monuments like the Church of Sant Miquel. The church’s iconic bell tower is accessible, and guided tours cover the most important historical sites.
Rupit is the main part of Rupit i Pruit, the official name for the municipality. Rupit and Pruit were independent until 1977, when they united to form a single administrative unit. Rupit village itself has approximately 280 inhabitants.
Global Recognition for Catalan Gem
The village’s emblem is a wooden suspension bridge, constructed in 1945 by four local workers. This bridge crosses the river and provides entry to the historic centre. Today, it remains a mandatory stop for visitors, serving as a popular spot for souvenir photographs. Rupit’s collective effort demonstrates how a healthy and successful tourism model can be maintained.
Rupit sits in the heart of the Collsacabra Protected Natural Area. From its viewpoints and hiking trails, visitors can enjoy lush forests, dramatic cliffs, intriguing caves, and impressive waterfalls. The Salt de Sallent, with a drop of over 100 metres, stands as one of Catalonia’s most spectacular waterfalls.
Preserving Heritage and Nature
The municipality actively promotes hiking and astrotourism activities. Its clear skies, free from light pollution, make it ideal for stargazing. The Generalitat de Catalunya recognised Rupit with a “Quality Night Sky” certification for these efforts. This commitment to preserving both its heritage and natural environment makes Rupit a model for sustainable tourism.
Local authorities ensure a variety of accommodation options for visitors. The Ajuntament states, “It has family-friendly hostels, rural accommodations surrounded by nature, cosy tourist homes, well-equipped colony houses, and a campsite where the tranquillity of Collsacabra can be breathed.” This diverse offering caters to many types of travellers seeking a rural escape.
A Blend of History and Natural Beauty
The village also encourages visitors to sample its local garden and mountain cuisine. Shops in the village sell typical regional products. These include bread, traditional cakes, wafers, cured meats, cheeses, and various other artisan-made goods. This focus on local produce enhances the authentic visitor experience.
Spain has other representatives on the UNWTO’s list of the world’s most beautiful villages. These include Alquézar in Huesca, Guadalupe in Cáceres, Lekunberri in Navarra, Morella in Castellón, Ezcaray in La Rioja, Agaete in Gran Canaria, Aínsa in Huesca, Mura in Barcelona, Cantavieja in Teruel, Sigüenza in Guadalajara, and Oñati in Gipuzkoa. Rupit’s blend of heritage and nature makes a visit an essential escape for lovers of history, culture, and the outdoors.
