Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council has started a project to transform the historic Can Collblanch estate into a new civic centre. This initiative will convert the 100-year-old property, located between Pedrera street number 1 and Alps streets numbers 4 and 6, into a public facility.
The City Council aims to "promote public and citizen use of the property, facilitating access for entities, associations, and citizens to the interior and exterior spaces," according to an official statement. This move will integrate Can Collblanch into the city's network of public facilities. Officials expect the new centre to expand typical civic centre activities and generate new participation dynamics.
The General Treasury of Social Security must formally assign the property for this conversion. Spanish law allows the Treasury to assign properties from its assets to other administrations for public use. This process changes the property's use and disposition without altering its ownership. The initial agreement sets a 20-year usage period, with an option for a 10-year extension. This extension depends on the City Council meeting its public use objectives.
Can Collblanch's Rich History
Can Collblanch is a significant historical estate in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a city within the Barcelona metropolitan area. Built in 1925, the property originally served as a summer house. It spans 1,812 square metres and features two floors and a garden. The estate holds considerable heritage value for the city. Despite its age, Can Collblanch has previously hosted social and community activities on various occasions.
Boosting Community Engagement
The new civic centre will reinforce local facilities that foster citizen participation, social cohesion, and community revitalisation. This project reflects a broader strategy by the executive, led by Mireia González, to enhance public spaces. Residents and local groups will gain improved access to resources and venues for their activities. This transformation aims to create a more connected and active community in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
The City Council awaits the formal assignment from the General Treasury of Social Security to proceed fully. Once approved, the project will move forward to establish Can Collblanch as a key hub for public life and community engagement for decades to come.
