Starbucks will start free creative writing workshops in Barcelona on Friday, May 8th. These sessions invite residents to develop micro-stories inspired by the city's rich literary heritage.
The first workshop, limited to just 10 places, sold out in two minutes. Author Milena Busquets, known for her autobiographical novel This Too Shall Pass, will lead this initial session. It takes place at the Starbucks located at La Rambla, 71.
El Confidencial exclusively reported that Busquets will also lead new workshops in June, September, and October. Journalist and writer Toni Ayala and Jordi Nadal, editor and director of Plataforma Publishing House, will guide other scheduled workshops. They will offer recommendations from their extensive experience.
Crafting Barcelona's Stories
Participants will create micro-stories set in Barcelona. These stories will form a collection published by Plataforma Publishing House in a limited physical edition. The collection will also be available for free download via the Starbucks Rewards application. The initiative includes literary recommendations in cafes and on the app. It also features exclusive content and activities to encourage reading and writing.
Barcelona's Deep Literary Roots
Barcelona earned UNESCO City of Literature status in 2015. For decades, the Catalan capital has served as a muse for many writers, attracting talent from various generations. Authors like Ildefonso Falcones, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and Mercè Rodoreda have set their novels in iconic city locations. These include the historic Gothic Quarter, the vibrant Raval district, and the charming Plaça del Diamant. The city regularly organises literary routes to promote reading habits and highlight its rich cultural wealth for both residents and tourists.
Starbucks itself holds a historical link to books. The company takes its name from the character Starbuck in Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick. Its cafes have also become informal offices for writers. Author Blue Jeans famously wrote much of his work at the Starbucks in Callao, Madrid, before its closure in 2020. This new programme reinforces Starbucks' connection with literature and creative expression.
Connecting with Catalan Culture
The workshops coincide with Saint George's Day, a significant cultural celebration in Barcelona. This day, known as Sant Jordi, sees people exchange books and roses, celebrating literature and romance. Starbucks will also launch a special merchandise collection inspired by the renowned Catalan artist Antoni Gaudí. This launch aligns with the upcoming Gaudí Year 2026, which will commemorate his legacy. The company plans to renovate some Barcelona stores, incorporating decorative elements based on Gaudí's distinctive trencadís mosaic technique, known for its broken tile artistry.
The free creative writing workshops will continue until November. They offer a unique opportunity for Barcelona residents and visitors to engage with the city's literary scene. This initiative aims to foster a shared space for pause, conversation, and inspiration within Starbucks cafes.
