A thief stole a handbag containing approximately €1,000 in cash and several car keys from a Barcelona mechanics workshop on Wednesday, 13 May. The incident occurred in broad daylight on Carrer de Llull, located in the Sant Martí district.
Bold Daylight Theft Captured on CCTV
The man entered the workshop's reception area in the early afternoon. He took advantage of a moment when no staff were present. The thief calmly picked up a handbag from the counter and then exited the premises with the same composure. Security cameras inside the establishment recorded the entire incident, according to reports from El Caso. The footage shows the man first peering into the workshop. He then slipped past a parked car and entered the office area when he saw no employees. He kept watch over his surroundings throughout the theft, ensuring no one would interrupt him.
The stolen handbag contained around €1,000 in cash, multiple car keys, and credit cards. The loss of car keys could pose additional security concerns for the workshop and its customers. The victim only realised the theft had occurred several hours later. Mossos d'Esquadra received the alert at approximately 18:00. Officers then attended the workshop at Carrer de Llull, 70, to investigate the reported crime.
Sant Martí Incident Highlights Urban Crime Trend
Sant Martí is Barcelona's second most populous district, home to over 240,000 residents. The workshop sits near the Bogatell metro station, a busy urban area. This incident reflects a broader trend of daylight thefts in the city. Perpetrators often act openly, seemingly undeterred by surveillance cameras. The victim has formalised a complaint and provided the clear CCTV footage to the police. This evidence is now central to the ongoing investigation.
The Mossos d'Esquadra's Unitat d'Investigació (UI) from the Sant Martí police station is now working to identify the individual responsible for the theft. Investigators are reviewing the security footage to gather further evidence and establish the thief's identity. As of now, police have not made any arrests in connection with the case. The investigation continues as authorities seek to apprehend the thief and recover the stolen items.
